A perhaps obscure film reference there, to Werner Herzog’s epic about a man who had a ship carried over a mountain range, but stay with us on this one.
We spotted the ANES ferry the Proteus at Loutraki on the MarineTraffic.com system this afternoon, and guessed it was probably on a trial run for when its Sporades-Volos services start on April 20.
When we checked back later, the interactive map at MarineTraffic.com had moored the 87-metre car ferry very conveniently up in Glossa (it’s the purple boat icon behind the town name above), from what we can tell somewhere accommodatingly close to the bus stop by the church. It was still there at 4.47pm today, ‘moving’, according to the map, at a stately 1.6 knots.
This is very probably a glitch in the system, and the Proteus may be moored in Loutraki or on its way back to the mainland. But if anyone does find a 300-foot car ferry in the street in Glossa, do let us know.
Might be a prank. Perhaps the ship was left unattended for a few minutes and a gang of husky Glossiotes decided to haul it up the mountain and leave it in the road. I picture the captain scratching his head and wondering where his ship went.
Meanwhile the funsters are hiding behind a wall giggling over all the confusion they have created.
No seriously, I’ve always held that Glossa-Skopelos canal would be a great idea. Such a project would create plenty of jobs for trench diggers, mountain movers and concrete slatherers. The technology is already available (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strépy-Thieu_boat_lift ) what’s missing is the vision and determination of the local authorities.
Envision yourself on the B deck of the Express Skiathos as you glide through Moutero at 16 knots, or throwing coins to the natives in Pefkias as the ferry starts its long, elegant descent to Skopelos and the sea.
Worse things have been built.
Coming up to seven-thirty and it’s gone. Anyone see, or hear, it go?
Hello, Glossa? Anybody there?
We are also missing the Evangelistria Skopelou who, at last contact yesterday, was near Samos and aimed at the coast of Turkey. She is due in Skopelos tomorrow – per the usual schedule.
The technology is pretty old, and still working: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niederfinow_boat_lift
Thanks Klaus. If we had about 20 – 30 lifts like those we would be in business!
Does this mean there will be a new/extra boat from Volos in April. We travel from Volos on the 22nd. Is there a schedule out for the ANES boat?
the 22nd April that is!
Hi Wendy, we reported a few weeks back that the Proteus would start a daily service from Volos from April 20 although it has yet to appear on their website (http://www.anes.gr/). They haven’t responded to our email enquiry, but we’ll try them again and post what we find.
Of course there are ferries at the bottom of the garden but “what can we do?”. Of more concern is the giant car air freshener in Palouki
