Passing by the port today we noticed that the “Unknown Mariner” had suffered some of the indignities common among stationary bronze figures.

The cast, similar to the one that graces Skiathos port, was commissioned by the Port Fund of Skopelos.

The memorial is an interesting concept and we are sure that the public money was well spent, but perhaps the memorial should be dedicated to all who are lost at sea especially the poor and desperate.

Our thanks to photographer Costas Andreou for sharing these images of the Skopelos Θεοφάνια, or ἐπιφάνεια, epiphany, yesterday morning, which this year persuaded five folks to jump off a fishing boat and swim for the cross. Conditions may look sunny and blue in Costas’s photos, but there was dry snow gusting along the paralia as we lined up to applaud the swimmers. Μπράβο σε όλους!
