tag on a 2.5 kilo bag of taters

tag on a 2.5 kilo bag of taters

After arriving home from a quick business trip to the market, we noticed that the tag (above) was chock full of information. A quick read revealed the following, translated row by row.

Potato of Naxos ΠΓΕ «προστατευόμενη γεωγραφική ένδειξη» (protected geographical indication)
Vεας Εσοδειας = new (recent) harvest
producer ID : #021/2014
Variety:ΣΠΟΥΝΤΑ
Price: 0,98Eur/KG
Weight: 2500 grams
Value: 2,45Euro
Date packed: 07/01/15
Two lines of some EU codes
Tax number of producer
“Forbidden to plant “(must mean “replant”) (006-20) the number of the legislation?

What really caught our eye was “ΣΠΟΥΝΤΑ”. Never heard of the Greek word. Then we realized that often the Greeks will take a foreign word – say fork, and turn it into Greek Φόρκα (forka) by simply adding a vowel at the end. Forka, by the way, is what an old farmer advised me to use to support a tree branch. He made the “V” sign with his fingers so that we would understand.

Back to the task at hand. Is it possible that SPOUNTA is a Hellenization of Spud? Or is Spud an Anglicization of SPOUNTA? In Greek the N+T combo makes a hard D sound as in Dull.

Those of us STILL on the grid should know that Deddis (ΔΕΗ) has announced an electricity cut this Sunday.
Some major corrective and upgrade work is being done in the south Pelion line which, as we all are aware, is the gateway for power from the mainland to the Northern Sporades (minus Skyros). So get your toast toasted before 07:30 because the power WILL be shut off sometime after.

Restoration will be whenever the work is finished, but for sure by noon or before (they say).

Here’s the announcement which enlarges with a click. This is the link to their website.power out sunday

It only needed

another storm to take this tree down. It was leaning dangerously over the footpath coming from the t-junction to Stafylos into the town. The guys from the municipality came and cut the enormous upper branches. Now only the bottom part remains.

The wood from the tree is hopefully used for the various woodburners in town.
