tony-desk We learned that our friend and fellow artist Tony Lakides died today in Sweden where he was receiving chemotherapy for cancer. Tony was a longtime summer resident of Skopelos, one of the earliest foreign denizens to visit, stay and become enchanted by the island. He knew everyone and everyone knew “Adonis”. Habitually found each morning at the “International” cafe, Tony was very pleasant company; regaling, amusing and confusing those in voice range with his acerbic point of view. As an artist he was constantly searching to express himself though he often relied on paintings of fish and cats to put food on the table. Tony also painted many signs for shops in the village and these show his excellent taste in composition, color and especially, wit. Our sister site, the lazy SkopelosArts, did a short profile of Tony which includes and interesting comments section. Within SkopelosArts there are a lot of references to Tony which you can find be using the “search” feature. We will miss him very much as his presence in Skopelos and anywhere brought a nice blend of peculiarity, humor and love. We wish Tony “Kalo Taxidi” and we send all our best wishes, love and sympathy to Anna-Carin and Tony’s wonderful daughter Zoe. It has been a very difficult winter for them. There are many others who will miss Tony dearly. If there are photos out there from Tony’s earlier days in Skopelos, please send them in for inclusion.

High and Dry and HighAt the end of a long and winding road (dunh-dah, duhn-dah) we ended up at this semi-confunding scene. Among the veal product, goats and chickens was this freshly painted caique waiting for delivery to the sea.
