This is the day after the day after the night it all happened. The shock is getting less but Skopelos is still numb after what has happened. Friends and relatives on the island have all been called and we confirmed that they are safe and we have the stories of what has happened to them. But where to start?
We (Daphne and family) have a car in the harbour that needs to be taken out so we can look at the damage, we have a piece of land on the ring road where a river of water washed the right part away and we have the road up to our house that has been flooded and part of it is gone. To repair those things it will just take time but I cannot imagine what other people are going through because their businesses have been destroyed. What money they earned this summer literally flooded away in this terrible storm. Amongst all the sadness you need to keep optimistic so this photo from Silje made me smile. It was taken on the road to the monasteries.
A question from Roger about coming into Skopelos and where they should park? I suggest near the health center Roger because the t-junction towards the harbour is the part of Skopelos that has been effected the most. Just walk along the road after that and turn left in the street of the post office. The car park in the harbour is a mess and too much traffic in front of Gikas bakery is dangerous.
More updates later about what is happening.
I was fortunate enough to spend 11 days there earllier this month and remember how friendly everyone was, both in the port and at my favourite beach, Panormos I had transferred to Skiathos when the storm hit and although the main road had a torrent of water rushing through it and the shops got flooded, they fortunately didnt suffer the structural damage that befell the people on Skopelos. So I send you all my best wishes and hope to visit you again soon
Fairly puts things in perspective, all this.
Well put Daphne, everyone was indeed in shock. Good luck with all the stuff you have to deal with. We all have “a lot on our plates” (we have serious retaining wall work to be done) so best wishes and good strength to all in your recoveries.
Very helpful, thank you.
Roger.
