Behaving ourselves on a stroll along the paralia after a modest salad lunch at Gialos on Sunday afternoon, we came across these weird collections of detritus at points along the quayside resembling the sort of stuff they retrieved from the Titanic.
This weekend was Let’s Clean Up Europe! day, and the Skopelos Diving Centre, with the help of the NIKOS sailing club, the municipality and the port police, plunged in to clear up some of the detritus from the harbour seafloor.
Apart from lost or abandoned fishing and sailing gear, most of the garbage appears to have been bottles chucked over the side by superyacht types, as flotty yachties rarely throw champagne bottles overboard.
But if anyone finds a working Rolex Oyster down there, it’s ours.
