“The olives are too small, they have the fly in them, not enough rain has fallen, it is too early to harvest them? Is the olive press open yet? The amount of olives and the olive oil you get is too small, the weather is going to change again.
All these questions circle in conversations held by those who want to collect olives. The gossip about quality, accidety etc. reach the villages and make you even more uncertain about when to start collecting or even if you are going to start.
Well our start of collecting olives coincide with me trying to start writing again for the blog.
Yesterday a friend of mine asked me to find a post about her son where I asked you readers to help out. I could not find the post immediately and had to scrawl through a year’s blog posts. I was surprised at how many posts I had written.
I want to start again and today seems a good day. I hope you are all well.
We decided to take only the olives that are left on the trees. It seems such a waste to leave these olives on this piece of land that has given us so much already this year: wild cherries, apricots, almonds, many varieties of plumbs, pomegranate and quince!
I am glad to be back, xx

I too am glad you are back Daphne and good luck with your olive harvest. A friend of mine on Crete has told me that this year’s harvest is expected to be good and so I hope it will be also, on Σκοπελου.
It is wonderful to hear from you again, Daphne. We wanted to move to Greece for ages, and Skopelos was certainly one of the places we considered. In the end, we moved from the Netherlards (Heerlen) to Crete just a couple of months ago. We will find a way to visit Skopelos next year. The olive harvest on Crete started already some weeks ago. I guess being much more to the south has something to do with that. I understand that harvesting the olives here usually starts before the end of October. It is so much fun to see all the olive grove owners driving their pick-ups laden with sacks of olives, often with people on top of those sacks. When we visited the Melissakis Olive Mill in Tsivaras (near Vamos on Crete) a couple of days ago, it was buzzing with all the farmers off-loading their cargo, the press was running at full capacity and a fast-food stall was smoking enormously, catering for all the people too busy to have proper diner during the harvest so a quick meal at the mill makes sense. It is like everybody is having fun, while working very hard to get the olives in. Lovely to see. Take care, Daphne.
I am sooo happy for you that you made to step to move to Greece and Crete. I hope you will be very happy there. Thank you for the comment Rob, xx Daphne
