The last island
The setting is a small, unnamed (fictional) island in the Sporades, but much inspired by Skopelos and to a lesser extent Alonnisos the author told me.

Of bells and pomegranates
Review by Jay Pullan
This is probably the best and most well written detailed, in depth book I have ever read in relation to a Greek Island. The first portion of the book describes about the Greek Orthodox church and faith, taking one on a journey of its history and then the interior design of the Orthodox church and associated meanings of its places and ornaments and icons. It explains about the hierarchy of the church and also about its responsibilities for and with the local communities. There is an extensive calendar of annual Greek Orthodox festivals taking place on the Island of Skopelos and insights into the structure and life of the Greek family as ordained by the auspices of the church. The second portion of the book concentrates on contemporary Greek culture revealing a more intimate glimpse into the general life of the Greek people who live on Skopelos, the politics, their crafts peoples, coffee house, music and dance, habits and superstititions. It does mention that the book has 298 pages, but ends at 285, although there are some introductory pre-pages …. as a book very difficult to put down once began it was almost disappointing that this very interesting book had to come to an end.

The butterflies of Skopelos
This book is written by Dr Brian Ridout, Philip Insall and Dr Elizabeth Ridout in October 2009. It lists and illustrates 40 different butterflies found and photographed on Skopelos. It forms part of an ongoing project to assess the wild life of the island. The butterflies were found after numerous trips to Skopelos. The authors mention that the list is certainly not comprehensive and that there will be species which they have not found yet. They will add species and change photographs as better are obtained. Any assistance with this project will be gratefully received. Please write to liz@ridoutassociates.co.uk and mention butterfly book

Barnes and Noble says that this book, sold for $43, is comprised of Wikipedia articles! http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/skopelos-sc-lambert-m-surhone/1025061499
It might be helpful to mention where these books can be purchased. Some are available and reviewed online at sites like Amazon.
Others are only available locally – for example, “A Breath of Madness” is sold at the Folklore Museum and at Pantelis Ghikas in Skopelos. All proceeds go to the Municipality after the retailer takes his cut.
Perhaps if the authors offered distribution details via “Comments” SkopelosNews could consolidate and post the information?
the marc held book was selling in different other stores too,I know it is in armoloi,in three languages, also greek and french. Also i have the Etel Ednan book in english, the nexspaper shop has it in greek.
Could we find a place and exchange books, once a week in the winter?anyone has an idea?
It might be as well to point out that ‘Gates of the Wind’ and ‘An Island in Greece’ by Michael Carroll are actually one and the same book – retitled and rejacketed. A good book and highly recommended but I wish I had known this when I bought the new-titled book!
