Skopelos at night…

Photographer and writer Beatrice Hamblett, who divides her time between her house in Aloupi and Washington, DC, has published a book of her photographs and texts from her travels on Skopelos, the Pelion, Epirus, Missalonghi and elsewhere over the troubled past decade, titled Daily Bread: Stories from Rural Greece. Beatrice works in what she calls “analog” tech, rather than digital, using a Hasselblad camera and rolls of film that she sources in either Greece or the USA, and develops here in a small photo lab or at home in Washington. She works almost exclusively in black and white – hence our gorgeous illustration from her book of Skopelos town at night, above – and often shoots on the hoof, when she thinks the moment, and image, are right. Her images often involve long voyages to distant locales (yes, Lambros, we’re thinking of you here…), hikes and climbs into snow-clad mountainsides. These are not tourist postcard shots of Greece, but rather enigmatic images of places and people glimpsed at odd angles, which will haunt the memory long afterwards. The book is on sale at Pantelis Gikas’s bookshop next to the soon-not-to-be-National Bank of Greece in Skopelos town, and is also available at Amazon.
