Jodeling our way down the Pelion mountain rode last Wednesday at about 5pm, we momentarily took our eyes off the road. In a quick glance we noticed something remarkable, this sunsetty thing happening so we pulled over. The weather had been unsettled all day and this display was the last gasp of weak sunlight over our beloved regional capital. Moisture in the air prevented the long view across Greece and we could only pick out Mavrovouno (between the power poles) and, to its left, an unnamed, perfect mountain just between Kokkinas and Perivlepto, Magnesias. The mountain might be called Saratzi.
The area around Volos or ancient Iolkos has been populated for millennia, although from the looks of things present day Volos and environs were once at the bottom of the sea.
